Greg Star, co-founder of Carvertise, faced a life-altering challenge at age 31 when he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a rare brain cancer typically found in children. His journey began with persistent headaches during his honeymoon, escalating to severe symptoms that led to an emergency room visit. There, a tumor was discovered on his cerebellum, and he was informed of a 5% chance he might never walk again. Following surgery, Star underwent intensive rehabilitation, 33 radiation sessions, and six rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, during which he lost 35 pounds and required 15 blood transfusions.
Throughout his treatment, Star embraced creativity and humor to maintain positivity—calling friends for “opening prayers” before chemotherapy and sharing dad jokes with his medical team. He found that sharing his story publicly not only provided personal strength but also had significant business implications, enhancing culture, sales, and recruitment at Carvertise. Reflecting on his experience, he emphasized the importance of staying even keeled in business, recognizing that challenges and successes are both transient.
Star’s resilience and insights from his cancer journey have not only influenced his personal life but have also enriched his leadership approach, underscoring the value of authenticity, creativity, and humor in both personal and professional spheres.
